Ep.127 / Was I Being Haunted? My Personal Ghost Stories

Josh gets personal in this a Halloween special featuring his ghost stories and paranormal experiences. Settle in for spooky storytelling, candid reactions, and the usual HOT AIR sass as Josh shares the experiences behind this very personal trip into the paranormal.

A HOT AIR Haunting: My Personal Ghost Stories and Paranormal Experiences

There is a difference between enjoying a ghost story and being the person telling one about their own life. It is easy to be brave when someone else is describing the strange experience. You can offer a perfectly sensible explanation, finish your snack, and carry on with your evening. Then the conversation turns to something that happened to you, and suddenly your confidence becomes a little less impressive. For this HOT AIR Halloween special, I’m sharing my personal ghost stories and paranormal experiences. Welcome to A HOT AIR Haunting: Josh’s Ghost Stories. Get comfortable. We are making Halloween personal this time.

My ghost stories take over HOT AIR for Halloween

October has given HOT AIR a chance to wander into true crime, paranormal stories, and horror. For this special, the focus turns toward my own experiences. There is something fun about that shift. Instead of asking you to follow someone else’s strange story, I get to tell you mine and hear what you think. That is the invitation: settle in with me, listen, laugh, and decide which questions you would ask next. You do not need to arrive with a firm belief about ghosts. You just need a little curiosity and an appreciation for a Halloween conversation that might get weird.

The tone is still HOT AIR. There will be opinions, there will be sass, and there will be room to enjoy the experience of telling a spooky story. Halloween is an excellent excuse to give ourselves an escape from the usual conversations. Personally, I think we deserve a night when the pressing question is whether somebody has a ghost story, rather than whether anyone has answered that email. One of those subjects has atmosphere. The other has a follow-up reminder. We are choosing atmosphere for this episode, and you are invited to join me for the entire strange little occasion.

Why personal paranormal experiences make good listening

A personal ghost story offers a different kind of connection from a fictional scare. The person telling it has their own perspective, their own reactions, and their own way of remembering what happened. Listening means spending time with that person as much as following the events. That is what makes this subject a good fit for a podcast. You can hear a story unfold in someone’s voice. You can react as if you were sitting together. And if your response is to interrupt with a question, trust me, I understand. Ghost stories have a way of making everybody suddenly become an investigator.

I like that they also leave room for different listeners. One person may recognize a feeling or an experience. Another may have a practical explanation ready before the story is finished. A third simply wants something spooky to listen to while getting ready. All three are welcome here. You do not have to pass a belief test to enjoy this Halloween special. The pleasure is in hearing somebody tell you what they experienced and seeing where your own thoughts go. Sometimes you want an answer. Sometimes you want to turn to a friend and ask whether they heard that part too.

Ghosts, coincidence, or something else?

The episode title asks, “Was I Being Haunted?” A question is a useful place to begin a personal paranormal conversation. It lets me share the experiences without deciding what every listener must conclude. It also gives you something to think about while you listen. What would stand out to you? What would you ask me to explain further? What would you have done in my place? Those questions make the listening active, even if your only visible contribution is a raised eyebrow. I welcome the eyebrow. Mine has participated in enough conversations to deserve its own microphone at this point.

There is a particular kind of fun in noticing how your own bravery changes depending on the setting. A ghost story in daylight, with people talking around you, can feel like a lovely bit of seasonal entertainment. The same conversation later, when everything is quiet, may earn a slightly different reaction. This is a general Halloween observation, not a request to turn every ordinary sound into a haunting. Still, I appreciate the person who confidently dismisses a spooky story and then asks somebody to accompany them down a dark hallway. We can discuss your reasoning while we both walk together.

A spooky-season escape with plenty of personality

Part of the reason I wanted this Halloween special is that spooky storytelling can be an escape without being empty. You can have a laugh, feel a little uneasy, and get to know the person telling the story better. That feels right for HOT AIR. I want listeners to have the sense that we are spending time together, even when the subject has taken a turn toward the paranormal. Nobody needs to bring a notebook. Bring a drink, bring a snack, and bring whichever friend will claim to be completely unbothered while quietly checking that their phone is fully charged.

Humor belongs in a ghost story because people are funny, especially when they are trying to explain themselves. You can be sincere about an experience and still recognize the ridiculousness of discussing the possibility of a haunting. Those things can sit comfortably beside each other. I do not think spooky season requires everyone to whisper solemnly for an hour. Sometimes the tension needs a laugh. Sometimes your immediate reaction deserves a little affectionate judgment. That mix of curiosity, nerves, and personality is what I enjoy about this kind of conversation, and it is the feeling behind A HOT AIR Haunting.

Make it your Halloween listening night

You can listen to this episode however you like, but I do enjoy the idea of making a small occasion out of it. Put your phone down for a while. Get comfortable. Give yourself permission to pay attention to a story without also answering messages and planning tomorrow. If you want the lights low, wonderful. If you prefer every lamp on and a familiar show queued up afterward, that is also a valid artistic choice. Nobody is grading your Halloween performance. Being entertained is enough. You can appreciate a spooky atmosphere while maintaining a very sensible relationship with the light switch.

Listening with a friend adds another layer because you get to compare reactions afterward. Maybe you notice different details. Maybe one of you wants more information while the other has already decided what they believe. Let the conversation happen. Ask each other what would have made the experience more unsettling or less convincing. Then leave room for somebody’s own story, because that is often where a paranormal conversation goes next. A simple question about ghosts can become an entire evening of people remembering something they have been waiting for an excuse to share. Halloween is a fairly convenient excuse, as excuses go.

Do you have a ghost story of your own?

One of my favorite possibilities with this episode is hearing what it brings up for you. Have you had an experience you thought might be paranormal? Have you told someone about it, or do you usually keep it to yourself? What do people ask when you share it? Those are the kinds of stories I would love listeners to send in. You do not need to make your experience sound like a movie. Tell it in your own words. Start with what you remember, describe what happened, and explain how it felt to you. The personal part is what makes it interesting.

You can submit a listener story through hotairwithjoshuarobert.com, along with suggestions for future topics. Please let me know whether you are comfortable having your submission shared on the podcast and whether you want your name used. If you would rather join the conversation publicly, find @_hotairpod on Instagram and TikTok, or comment on the YouTube episode. I want to hear what you make of my stories too. You might have a question I have not considered, or an experience that makes you understand my reaction immediately. Either way, it is a much better conversation when you get to take part.

If this is your first spooky-season HOT AIR episode, there is more waiting for you. The Oscar Wilde ghost episode follows a very different paranormal story, while the Freddy Krueger episode celebrates horror movies and the conversations they inspire. This Halloween special brings that seasonal curiosity back to my own life. You can begin here, then explore whichever subject catches your attention next. Choose a ghost story, choose a movie conversation, or spend some time with both. Think of it as assembling your own Halloween listening lineup, with considerably fewer costume changes.
